Welcome to Issue 5 of The Bear Facts.

Firstly, thank you to everyone for getting on board with the e-newsletters. We have seen our number of subscribers more than double – so please continue to share and encourage people to sign up.

With both the Youth and Senior seasons now underway the Club is very pleased with how things are progressing. Trevor Morris has the seniors very motivated, focused and organised.
This has been evident in each of their games and is very positive for the season.

Our Youth continue to be coached and developed to produce good people, good players and good football. Recent performances against the Emerging Jets is evidence of that – well done to everyone.

More great news was recently announced with the Club successfully gaining a $20,000 grant from the Federal Governments ‘Stronger Communities Program’. This funding will complement the recent and current work at the ground to continue developing a fantastic community facility.

In this new age of the NPL we are very fortunate to have many new and long term sponsors. We cannot do it with them and for their support we are extremely grateful.
Please visit our sponsors page and support those who support our Club.

Our Vegas night is run and done for another year and a fantastic time was had by all. Many thanks to all who attended and dressed up to make it so much fun. Also, huge thanks to the organisers Jacqui Lewsam, Bernadette Henderson and Brooke Cunningham for your outstanding work.

Also, we have a number of team dinners coming up so be sure to check out the Bears website noticeboard and note the dates in your diary.

Finally - from all of us at the Bears we would like to wish all the fantastic mums out there a very happy Mothers Day.

I hope you find this edition's news and articles of interest and remember....

C’Mon you Bears!!

Stronger Communities

SCG

Fantastic to have Member for Hunter, Joel Fitzgibbon & Federal Labor Candidate for Paterson, Meryl Swanson, visit our ground and deliver the great news of Weston's successful round 1 grant application in the 'Stronger Communities Program'.

Weston President, Rod Henderson, was also on hand to show and discuss recently completed, current and future works.

The Club thanks the Member for Hunter and Candidate for Paterson for taking time out of their busy schedules and their support of the Weston Workers Bears FC.

State Cup Update

SC

As soon as Terry Hickey pulled the protruding handle from a bin of scrap metal and freed the the object, he knew exactly what he was holding....

"At that time I knew what I had in my hands. Being a History and Australian Studies graduate from Deakin University, Australian sport is a research area I am so passionate about.

It's hard to convey what I felt  at that moment. Certainly surprise and grateful of the find but, a little bitter. Bitter because this is not just a sponsors cup, it is 12 years of NSW Australian Soccer history. How could this happen?"

Terrence Hickey 2016

How many times have you looked at the fantastic 1936 photo of the all conquering Weston team? Well, in that photo is the State Cup. Right next to the legend James 'Skeeta' Wilkinson and a young club mascot.

On February 26 Terry contacted our Club and briefly explained what he had in his possession and if we would like to work with him to restore this wonderful piece of history?
Bears President - Rod Henderson, Vice President - Duncan Nisbet and Club Secretary - Shane Johnson met Terry not long after and were blown away with what was sitting on the table in front of them. They immediately agreed to exploring the different avenues and advice to restoration.

Their investigations led to the famed WJ Sanders. W.J. Sanders & Company was established in Sydney by accomplished Birmingham silversmith William Sanders in 1911, and is today, the only traditional manufacturing silversmith still operating in Australia. Amazed by this trophy and even more by the story of how it was saved, the people at WJ Sanders were adamant that the the process to restore begin ASAP.

The State Cup is now, as we speak, taking a long soak to clean and prepare for the next phase of it's new life.

We look forward to bringing you more updates soon and what the future holds for the cup.

NPL Rd3 replay

NPL3

Weston welcomed Broadmeadow to Rockwell Automation Park for their round 3 NPL fixture on a super day for football.

As always, the U19s got the day underway and recorded a great 1-0 win via a goal from Tristan Muir.

The U22s lead through a Jacob Golding goal and should have had a 3 or 4 goal advantage in an early dominant performance. Lapses in defence unfortunately led to a turnaround in fortunes and a 1-5 defeat.

First grade still looking for their 1st win were dealt no easy task against a strong Broadmeadow outfit. It what turned out to be a very entertaining game it was Weston who could be considered unfortunate to not have secured the 3 points. Great opportunities for Mick Ryan, Rob Macbeth and Mitchell Wallace, some super link up play throughout the game and a penalty save from Benn Kelly from a dubious decision, were features of a very good performance from the Bears.

A full replay of the game can be viewed below.
