Concussion Policy
1.2 Purpose
A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury that can have a serious effect on a young, developing brain. While most children and teens with a concussion recover quickly and fully, some will have concussion symptoms that last for days, weeks, or even months.
Our purpose is to prevent long term injury and handle treatment protocols effectively.
1.3 Principle
The process to be followed if you suspect a player has a concussion:
1. Remove player from play immediately
2. Call 000 for an ambulance immediately if any of the following symptoms are present:
-
Loss of consciousness (even if only briefly)
-
Any period of amnesia, or loss of memory of the event *Vomiting
-
Seizure
-
Severe headache
In the event of an emergency, if 000 for an ambulance is to be called it shall be by the host club Game Day Convener following consultation with the team Physio or First Aid Officer and parent (if under 18 years of age).
Note: Physio (or Team manager in the event the Physio is not available) or First Aid Officer are to stay with the injured player until ambulance has arrived.
3. Contact club secretary for information on medical insurance within the club
4. Manager to complete an Incident Report and submit to the club within 24 hours
5. If a player has a diagnosed concussion, or a suspected concussion, a medical clearance by a health professional will be required before the player is able to play or train again.
The Medical clearance certificate is to be given to your team manager. Team manager will send to admin@westonfc.com.au for club records.
1.4 Outcome
Weston Workers Bears FC strongly recommends all head injuries are seen to by a health professional.
Coaches, Managers and all committee members are able to request a player is seen to by a medical professional for advice and treatment before they return to train and/or play if they have concerns.
No player will return to play after a diagnosed concussion unless there is a medical clearance given in writing to the club.
