Saturday week (September 10) the 15’s will play on home soil at Thomas & Coffey Park in the decider with kickoff at 9am.
Weston’s’ opponents will be either Valentine or Hamilton who clash in the final this Saturday.
From all of us at Weston - Congratulations on making your grand final.
C'MON YOU BEARS!!!
The Bears hosted new Premiers Broadmeadow Magic at Thomas & Coffey Park for the 1st League of the Semi Final Series and have given themselves a great opportunity to make the State League Grand Final by beating the Magic 2-1.
Not only was a win important for the Bears but it was also paramount that they keep the Magic's prolific goal scorers quiet as all away goals will count double if aggregate scores are level at the end of both fixtures. The Bears attack were the first to cause major problems in the game and midfielder Rob MacBeth gave the Bears the edge when he got his head to a Micky Ryan flick on and found the net in the 10th min for a 1-0 lead.
The referee was the centre of attention soon after when he first allowed play to continue when the ball clearly crossed the Magic goal line before the keeper dragged it back but the referee really got the Bears supporters up in arms in the 36th min when he awarded Magic a ridiculously soft penalty that should have never been given. Bears keeper Tim Pratt did well to get a hand on the spot kick but unfortunately he was unable to get enough on it and the score was levelled up at 1-1 which it remained to the half time break.
Broadmeadow were unlucky not to rub insult into injury when they had a fantastic chance 10 minutes after the restart that cannoned into the corner of the crossbar. The Bears continued to pressure the Magic defence and they were rewarded in the 62nd when Robbie Turnbull played a square ball to a waiting Nathan Morris who hit a rocket of a low shot from 20mts past the Magic keeper to give the Bears a deserved 2-1 lead.
Both sides continued to play a fast and physical end to end style of football but neither side found the net again before the referee blew an end to the game. Next Sunday the Bears will look to take advantage of the 2-1 lead and cement their spot in their 2nd consecutive State League Grand Final when they contest the 2nd leg of the Semi Final Series at Broadmeadow's Wanderers Oval, Kick off is 2:30.
The U/19's also took part in the Semi Finals and they like first grade have a 2-1 advantage in the 2 legged series after beating Valentine Phoenix on Sunday at South Cardiff. Ben Henry was the hero for the young Bears bagging a brace. Next Saturday the young Bears will contest their 2nd leg at Macquarie Field with kick off at 11am.
