Round 6 of the NBN State League saw the Bears host Valentine Phoenix on Easter Saturday.

Nathan MorrisThe Bears have strung together some great results since the shock defeat in the first round against South Cardiff and the supporters only had to wait 5 minutes for them to take the lead in the match. The goal was scored after some strong work out wide on the right from Robbie Turnbull who played the ball back to Nathan Morris. Morris struck his low shot with plenty of power into a crowded Phoenix box, his shot was then deflected off Mick Holt and into the back of the net to give the Bears an early 1-0 lead.

Neither side really dominated the other and the game was starting to be a real slug fest until the 33rd when Mick Holt played a fantastic ball for Jamie Subat who made no mistake with a perfectly placed header to give the Bears a handy 2-0 lead that they held onto and took to the sheds for the break.

The start of the second half didn't offer much from a spectators point of view with Phoenix having the better of the play. Phoenix looked to be on goal in the 58th min when Bears keeper Tim Pratt was called upon to make a fantastic 1 on 1 save to keep the Bears 2 goal advantage.

Phoenix continued to push forward and in the 71st min they out muscled the Bears defence in a scramble and threaded the needle through the congested goal mouth to get them back in the game at 2-1.

jamiesWith the time almost up, Phoenix missed a golden opportunity to equalise when they got the ball to the line and cut it back into the Bears box but luckily for the Bears the ball somehow eluded everybody and was cleared to safety for the Bears to hang on for the 3 points.

U/23's season is going from bad to worse with a 3-7 flogging that has left them with plenty of soul searching and has made them entrenched in last spot on the table. Hayden Nicol (2) and Lucius Beyer the scorers.

The Youth Squad on the other hand are enjoying life at the opposite end of the table with their perfect start to the season continued with 2-0 win. The young Bears are showing plenty of promise and could have easily won the game by a bigger margin if things went their way. Jacob Montgomery and Tim Gleeson found the net for the Bears.

Next week the Bears are away to the side that every  Bears player and supporter alike love to hate, Edgeworth Eagles. The match is always a big one with plenty of history and feeling between both clubs but this game will hold plenty of significance after last season's Grand Final when the Bears went down to Edgeworth 2-4 in the decider.

C'MON YOU BEARS!!!!!!
