The Bears made the short trip over the mountain to take on West Wallsend for the round 4 of the NBN State League.
Joel Page has been playing some strong football for the Bears this season but after only 10 mins he was hammered by the West Wallsend defenders and as a result had to be taken to hospital by ambulance with a back injury.
Westy had the first chance on goal and made no mistake with a well hit volley from the edge of the Bears 18 yd box to take a 0-1 lead. Rob Macbeth came close to levelling up the scoreboard with a header that crashed into the crossbar 6mins later.
The Bears won a free kick on the left in the 30th min. Nathan Morris's free kick forced the Westy Keeper to punch the ball straight up in the air for Mick Holt to out jump the defence and header the ball home to even the score up at 1-1.
Mick Holt bagged a brace 6 mins after his first goal when he was again on the end of a perfectly placed Nathan Morris free kick that struck the top right hand corner of the post and fell into the crowded 6 yard box for Holt to again out muscle the Westy defence and give the Bears a 2-1 lead.
Both sides had further chances to add to the scoreline but it took the Bears Captain Chris Cousins to put the ball past the keeper. Cousins hassled well to get on the end of a Mick Holt corner and put the ball into the bottom left hand corner of the goal in the 44th min and send the Bears to the sheds with a 3-1 lead.
Westy looked to have pulled 1 back in the 51st min but Bears keeper Tim Pratt somehow kept the ball out after a goal mouth scramble before the Bears defence cleaned up the rest and cleared to safety. Things got worse for Westy when they had a player sent off in the 71st min.
The Bears continued to push forward looking for another goal to finish off the game with the best chance falling to Jamie Subat in the 86th min. Subat got behind the defence before cutting back towards goal and on for a 1 on 1 with the keeper only to have the his shot blocked and the score remain at 3-1 for a valuable Bears win.
U/23's horror run continued with a 2-4 loss. The side took an early 2-0 lead before letting Westy put 4 goals past them. Nathan Willoughby and Jordan Howard the scorers.
The Youth side made it 4 wins from 4 games with a solid 2-0 win. Daniel Robinson and Jake Barner finding the net for the young Bears.
The Bears will be looking to add to the positive results of the past 3 weeks next Sunday when they travel to Broadmeadow Magic's Wanderers Oval. The game is an important one for both sides with only 2 points separating the fifth placed Bears and 2nd placed Broadmeadow Magic.
