What a night it was. The proceedings kicked of with Mitchell Hughes, superb as the evenings MC, calling upon Shane Johnson and Graham Snedden to present two special awards.

Honorary Membership was presented to Bruce Wilson & Life Membership to Niel Fellows.

Northern NSW Football CEO, David Eland, presented Club Head Coach, Steve Piggott, with a plaque in recognition of our 50 consecutive years of State League football.

Any Harper was fantastic and proved why he is one of the most popular and respected football pundits in Australia through his thoughtful and insightful views on football in this country.

The incredible appearance of 'The Man, no I'm the man, no I'm the man' Alessandro Del Piero took the crowd by complete surprise. He mesmerised the audience with stories of his times and struggles in Australia. Thanks ADP - don't worry mate, she'll be apples!

Highlight of the night was the naming of the select 14 of the past 50 years with each player receiving a cap in recognition.

Bears Select 14;
R Johnson, J Bond, D King, W Halverson, JJ Turnbull, JT Turnbull, T Snedden, N Morris, C Thornton, B Gemmell, J Kavanagh, D Miller, O Bellamy, D Stoker

Adding fuel to the fire of all the conspiracy theorists out there Elvis Presley made an appearance and confirmed he most definitely lives on and, judging by some of the photos, long.

Auctions followed and again the generosity was humbling.

Bear of the Century and newly capped 50 Seasons member, John Bond, brought the house down singing 'You'll Never Walk Alone'. He was joined by everyone in a song he has made his own.
With the floor and stage crowded with people it was the first graders turn to noise it up with the club song with the rest of the crowd as the biggest back up group ever.

Last and certainly not least, Life Member & number 1 fan, June Horder, cut the 50 year cake and bringing the official part of the night to a close.

THANK YOU to the Organising & Fundraising Committee, without your hours of preparation, the night would not have been the success it was!

We sincerely appreciate the many organisations and families who donated prizes, thank you also.

A last thank you to the 250 plus people who attended & we hope you had a great night!

C'mon you Bears!!!

On a beautiful day and on an amazing playing surface Weston welcomed the Newcastle Jets to Rockwell Automation Park for the final round of the season.

groundOur young U19s were first off the rank and although going down 1-2 will feature in the semi finals.

The U22s suffered defeat 1-4 but despite the loss it was impressive to see how they turned a slow start to the year around and finish strongly.

First grade had it all to play for. Only a win would suffice and to add more spice it was against the other contenders for the title, the Jets youth.

A superb crowd had turned up on a perfect day. BAR TV were live streaming the game and the 50th season celebrations were happening that night - Big day!

Weston began the game strongly and were clearly up for it putting the Jets under pressure from the start. As the half progressed both teams settled and the Bears were denied a strong penalty shout when the Jets keeper, who had an outstanding game, appeared to foul in the area but play was waved on. The Jets threatened but it was Weston who definitely had the better chances of the half.

photo 1Early pressure after half time from the Bears finally paid off when Carl Thornton met a lovely Nathan Morris corner to give Weston a 1-0 lead in the 48th min.
Both teams traded blows with the majority of the chances falling to the Bears. As time started to wind down the Jets began to assert themselves and a period of pressure finally paid off. A free kick on the edge of the box, while superbly saved by Tim Pratt, saw the ball fall to a Jets player who made no mistake from close range.

Weston had 8 minutes to find the goal need to take the premiership back and although chances were created the Jets held on to lift the cup.

The Weston Workers Bears would like to congratulate the Newcastle Jets youth on their premiership and thank them for adding to what was a great day for football.

To our lads, it was a super effort and on another day it would have been ours. However, the great thing about football is there is always a next time and both 1st grade and the U19s have semi finals to prepare for.

Well done everyone on their regular seasons and let's get behind our teams in the semi finals and.....

C'mon you Bears!!!
