Round 7 saw Weston host the Newcastle Jets Youth at Rockwell Automation Park.
On a perfect day for football the U19s started well and went to oranges with the score at 0-0. A single goal to the Jets is all that separated the teams at the end and this young U19s team will continue to build upon the lessons learnt in this first round.
Weston's U22s were searching for their forst 3 points of the season and at half time they were leading 1-0. They were able to hold their lead until the final whistle and deservedly claimed all points.
First grade were looking to build on the good, early, foundations they have laid. This was challenged only 4 minutes into the game as the jets took the lead. They doubled this advantage in the 16th minute and the score stayed the same till the break.
Almost instantly after the resumption of play the Jets landed another. Jamie Subat hit back quickly for the Bears and soon after Jason Cowburn could have reduced the deficit further but his penalty struck the crossbar. This would have made things very interesting but it was the Jets who again netted twice to take their tally to 5. Garry McDermott did score a late consolation but the damage was done and it remained 2-5 in the Jets favour.
Had the Bears taken their chances the result would have been much different and the creation of so many opportunities is a big positive.
Weston are at home again next week and welcome South Cardiff in round 8 of the NNSW NPL....
C'mon you Bears!!!
Weston's U22s & U19s travelled to Edgeworth to play their postponed matches against the Eagles.
The U19s notched up a fine result winning 2-1. Our U22s ensured a share of the points with a 1-1 draw.
Weston welcomed Adamstown Rosebud to Rockwell Automation Park for their round 6 clash and a renewing of old rivalries.
U19s were first up and the young Bears were pleased to take a 1-0 lead to the sheds at half time. The second half was a different story and although Weston had enough chances to win the game many times over they didn't convert and went down 2-1. It was one of those days and good lessons will definitely been learned by this talented group.
The U22s were looking to get their season going and would have been at half time with the scores at 0-0. The second half saw 5 goals and while it was good entertainment it was only for those in green & red. The final score was 4-1 to the Buds.
First grade, in front of a good crowd and looking to keep their early season momentum going started the game positively but a defensive lapse provided Adamstown with an opportunity they did not waste. Weston however remained calm in their approach and looked the more threatening as the half wore on. Adamstown's keeper made a number of excellent saves to deny Weston on several occasions but he could do nothing about a Robbie Turnbull free kick that found a top corner to level the scores.
The second half saw Weston continue to press for a winner and a number of great chances were created either to be saved , squandered or narrowly missed. To Weston's credit they continued to work for a result and in turn the game began to open up. A super piece of build up work and a cross zinged in by Tom Sparre was met, at pace, by the head of Jamie Subat but the ball bulleted just over the bar - this basically summed the day up - some great endeavour but little reward.
Adamstown were now making the Bears sweat with some attacking play and Tim Pratt saving well on a couple of occasions. In what was close to the last attacking plays of the game the Bears had a penalty call denied - The Buds broke on the counter and a last gasp tackle by Brock Oakley halted play but also saw him see red and an early shower. 1-1 is how it ended.
Weston are at home again next Saturday as they take on the, top of the table, Newcastle Jets Youth. Kick of is at 2:45pm and ....
C'mon you Bears!!!
Weston's ongoing efforts to improve coaching outcomes at the Club continues tonight when all of the Clubs coaches will meet to discuss all areas of the job. This builds upon a solid foundation that has seen the formation of the Bears academy among other great initiatives in both the junior & senior programs.
Well done to all involved.
