The Bears met their old time rivals and last season Grand Final opponents Edgeworth Eagles in round 15 at Thomas and Coffey Park.
Last time the 2 sides met it was a freezing midweek match played on a slippery Edgeworth pitch. The Bears came away with a very convincing win that night and they looked to continue the trend in the opening minutes of this match with some very early chances that they failed to capitalise on.
Edgeworth also had a fantastic early chance when they forced Bears keeper Tim Pratt to make a great save from a 1 on 1 with a Edgeworth attacker in the 10th min. Pratt was unable to keep the Eagles out 3 minutes later when they put the ball into the back of the net to place the Bears behind on the scoreboard 0-1.
Mick Ryan, who before kickoff was inducted as only the 28th player in 105 seasons to play 100 first grade games for the Bears looked to be about to celebrate the special occasion with a goal in the 18th min. The chance was created through a great ball from Jamie Subat that put Ryan in for a 1 on 1 with the Edgeworth keeper but the keeper cut the angle down perfectly and did enough to force Ryan's effort into the side netting.
Edgeworth further dented the Bears hopes when they were awarded a free kick in the 40th min. Former Socceroo Troy Halpin curled his free kick into the top left hand corner to put the Bears behind 0-2. The Bears almost hit back 1 minute later when they also were awarded a free kick 25mts out from the Edgeworth goal. Nathan Morris curled his low shot towards the bottom right hand corner but again the Edgeworth keeper made a fantastic save to deny the Bears and the score remained 0-2 at half time.
Like the first half, Edgeworth's defence repelled everything that the Bears threw at them and although the Bears had plenty of possession in the 2nd half, they failed to create much with it and on many occasions poor options handed the ball back to Edgeworth in dangerous areas.
The Bears players must have be thinking what they have to do to stop the ridiculous penalty decisions going against them when they once again saw the referee point to the spot. Edgeworth made no mistake and put their lead out to 0-3 midway through the 2nd half.
Robbie Turnbull made the score look a little more respectable when he fought hard in a goal mouth scramble to find the net via a low drive with the 2nd last touch of the match to make the score 1-3. The referee then blew full time as soon as Edgeworth kicked off and the Bears poor recent run continued with a 1-3 defeat.
U/23's started the game well but then imploded to record another loss, this time it was 0-4 while the U/19's offered the only positive result of the day with a 2-0 win. Goals were scored by J Montgomery and S Turnbull.
Next week the Bears will be looking to bounce back to form and reverse this rounds result when they find themselves once again taking on Edgeworth, this time however it will be at Edgeworth with kick off at 2:30pm.
