Wednesday nights game with the Jets was a fantastic turnout and not just for the football. Entry to the game was via a gold coin donation with all gate donations going to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. This saw a brilliant response with $2222.00 raised on the night!
Congratulations and thank you everyone.
The Bears were at home for round 14 of the NBN State League. They hosted a side that is fast becoming their bogey side, South Cardiff Gunners. This season the Bears have met Southy twice in the League and once in the Solo Cup, each time Southy have finished on top, so the Bears were keen to turn the tables and hang on to 2nd spot on the ladder.
The first 42 minutes of the match wasn't overly entertaining for the spectators, with both sides continually turning over the ball and failing to create many opportunities on goal. The Bears fans finally got excited though with 2 goals in the last 3 minutes of the half. Mick Ryan scored the first when he perfectly placed his low shot across the keeper and into the bottom right hand corner of the net followed by a Chris Cousins header in the last play of the half to send the Bears into the sheds with a handy 2-0 lead.
Jamie Subat made a great run straight from the restart to get behind the defence before cutting the ball back perfectly for Mick Holt who should have extended the lead but Holt failed to get over his shot and the great opportunity was wasted.
The Bears chances continued to flow and they had 3 further fantastic chances between the 50th and 53rd minutes. Southy made the Bears pay for the several missed opportunities when they put one past Bears keeper Tim Pratt in the 54th min to bring the score back to 2-1.
South Cardiff were now looking the more dangerous of the 2 sides and were putting plenty of pressure on the Bears defence with several half chances on goal. The Bears then put the game to bed with a goal in the 75th min to Mick Ryan. Ryan scored the goal after Matt Toohey played a fantastic ball that found Ryan who showed plenty of composure to shrug of the defenders and place the ball into the net to give the Bears a 3-1 win.
U/23's had several 1 on 1's go begging and 2 strong penalty claims denied before having to settle for a 1-1 draw. Dave Field the scorer. U/19's season that promised so much has continued its downward spiral with a 2-0 loss in a match that they dominated and should have comfortable won if not for terrible finishing and basic mistakes.
Next Sunday the Bears are again at home against their old rivals Edgeworth Eagles. Edgeworth have started to string together some decent results and most games between the 2 clubs are always entertaining with hard and physical football being played by both sides. The match will take on even more significance for the Bears as striker Mick Ryan will become the 27th player and also the 5th current First Grader to reach the achievement of playing 100 First Grade competition games for the Mighty Bears.
C'MON YOU BEARS!!!!!!!!
In the wake of the Bears game against the Jets the Weston Workers Bears would like to say thank you to all involved.
As seen with last years SOLO Cup Final and State League Grand Final Weston have a fantastic connection with the Hunter football community. It was on show again, against the Jets, when on a very cold Wednesday night, with a 7:00pm kick off, almost 2000 people were in attendance.
To make the night work, the small army of Bears volunteers were outstanding. From the preparation of the ground to the work in the canteen, on BBQs, in drinks outlets, on the gate, as ground officials and the administration of the evening, it was a huge team effort and an example of the high calibre of people involved and their commitment to the Club - Thank you everyone!
To our players, thank you. It was a very impressive, sharp and clinical Jets outfit you faced and to assist their pre-season build up and preparation is what the game was all about.
Also, to all of our other senior and junior players in attending as part of the mentor program - well done! For a midweek game, a near 100% attendance is a credit to you all and you certainly saw a great exhibition of attacking football. And while the result wasn't favourable to the Bears, we are all fans and hope to see the Jets continue to impress.
To those who came to support the Bears or the Jets, one thing is for sure - people were very generous with their gold coin donations towards the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Our area is steeped in football and it shows - Thank you for coming and making the night a fantastic event.
Finally - thank you to the Jets. Bringing your team to our community has a huge impact and we hope you saw it last night - we look forward to your next visit and wish you every success in the upcoming season.
Yours in football
