The Bears kicked of their NPL season and 50th consecutive season in the top league by hosting Lake Macquarie at Rockwell Automation Park.

1st of the rank were the youthful U19s who came away with a fine 2-1 win. Goal scorers for Weston were P Wand and J Golding.

The U22s were deadlocked 0-0 at half time and that continued through the second half to share the points at full time.

First grade were greeted with some light rain as they emerged and quickly took the game to lakes. This pressure was rewarded in the 14th minute when Jason Cowburn swooped on a parried Jamie Subat shot and deposited the ball, at speed, into the net. The Bears coninued to press but it wasn't until the 43rd minute they bulged the net via a Nathan Morris special - 22 yards out and to the right of the 'D' he delivered a pinpoint free kick that rose over the wall then dipped under the crossbar.

Lakes found themselves back in the game after the break and began to ask questions of the Bears defence coming close to scoring on a number of occasions. However it was Mick Ryan in the 75th who found himself on the end of a perfect cross to nod home Weston's third and take the game beyond Lakes reach.

The Roosters did score a consolation in the 86th but Weston saw the game out as 3-1 victors.

Well done to everyone today - a great start. Also those who played their part preparing the ground and amenities for Weston's first senior NPL games.
