A commitment from Weston to develop the players we select

The Weston Workers Bears Football Club are pleased to announce the commencement of their Youth Academy.

Players selected in the Clubs U13, U14, U15 & U17 squads will make up the Academy and emphasises the commitment from Weston to develop the players we select.

This initiative allows for the addition of a substantial number of extra skills based sessions, which are crucial for player development. If we want our players to compete against the best in the league, it is critical for their development that they train and play as much as possible and in the right environment.

The primary goal of Weston Workers Bears FC Youth Academy is to focus on improving the skills of young players in a positive environment. As part of this we need to work together as a Club. Coaches, players and parents need to move away from a 'must win' culture and understand that youth development is a long term commitment where results are not our immediate goal.
Weston has a proud tradition of promoting youth which was again evident in season 2013 where 6 players under the age of 20 made their first grade debuts.

With 2 Bears teams in grand finals this weekend it was always going to be big.

Both the U14s and U17s had done the hard yards all season and were worthy premiers. They then went into the frenzy that can be finals football and both made it to the final game of the season.

P1030793Saturday saw the U14s take on Lambton on a very warm day. In a game that went the distance and then some it needed penalties to decide the outcome. In what is always a cruel way to lose it was the young Bears who had to experience it this time.
This result in no way takes away the super season this team has had and in football winning the premiership is always the ultimate prize. Hold your head up boys you had a fantastic year and played in a grand final - all valuable experience.

Sunday and it was the U17s State League premiers who took on Lakes at Wanderers Oval. In front of an amazing Weston support the Bears got off to a flyer and were 2 goals to the good within the first 5 minutes via an Alex Mathais header and shot to the corner by Thomas Sparre. The lead was extended to 3 when Bailey Cox netted and this is how the teams went to the sheds at half time. The second half saw Lakes come out with real purpose and start to take it to Weston. This was rewarded with a goal that gave their support some hope of a comeback. It was short lived however and within 2 minutes Weston had restored their 3 goal lead at 4-1 and it was Sparre again bulging the net for a grand final brace. A super finish by Lachlan Nicol took the tally to 5-1 and although Lakes pegged another back the win was well and truly sealed.

gfThis was an emphatic win by a team that worked hard on their game all year and even harder for each other. With many current Bears first graders watching on, the overwhelming feeling was of pride at this group of boys with a never say die attitude.

On behalf of the Club we would like to thank both teams - players, coaches, managers, families - for this year. To be at the pointy end of the season and representing Weston in such a brilliant way makes us all very proud. We also hope you have experienced what makes this Club so special to be a part of.

And..........

C'MON YOU BEARS!!!
